Timothy Calamette Dives Deep Into the Mind of Bob Dylan for A Complete Unknown
Timothy Calamette is stepping into the shoes of one of music’s most iconic figures, Bob Dylan, in the upcoming biopic, A Complete Unknown.
The actor has dedicated a staggering five years to prepare for this challenging role, and he recently opened up about his journey in an interview with Rolling Stone.
At just 28 years old, Calamette is making waves as he embodies the legendary folk singer.
In the December issue of Rolling Stone, he shares insights into the intense preparation that went into portraying a young Dylan, who is now 83.
The pressure was palpable for Calamette, who admits that he often found himself panicking about missing out on key moments of discovery while preparing for the role.
He expressed how important it was for him to stay focused during those three months of filming.
“I had three months of my life to play Bob Dylan, after five years of preparing to play him,” he explained.
For Calamette, this was more than just acting; it was about honoring Dylan’s legacy.
“He deserved that and then more,” he added, emphasizing the weight of the responsibility he felt.
Calamette revealed that he pushed his preparation to the limits, almost to the point of psychological exhaustion.
The fear of being distracted by his own identity, “Timmy,” haunted him.
“God forbid I missed a step because I was being Timmy.
I could be Timmy for the rest of my life,” he said, highlighting the internal struggle of balancing his true self with the character he was trying to portray.
Interestingly, Calamette found parallels between his own career and Dylan’s journey.
He noted that if Dylan couldn’t immediately become a star like Elvis or Buddy Holly, he sought inspiration from Woody Guthrie, which resonated with Calamette.
“I was knocking on one door that wouldn’t open, so I went to what I thought was a more humble door with indie roles,” he reflected, acknowledging how this decision ultimately led to significant opportunities in his own career.
A Complete Unknown tells the story of a young Dylan arriving in New York City at just 19 years old during the early 1960s.
Directed by James Manvold, the film boasts a talented cast, including Elle Fanning, Edward Norton, and Monica Barbaro, among others.
Each actor brings their unique touch to this compelling narrative about the folk icon’s formative years.
Fanning, who portrays Sylvie Russo—Dylan’s girlfriend and muse—also shared her thoughts with Rolling Stone.
She reminisced about the first time she heard Calamette perform as Dylan, recalling the surreal experience of witnessing his transformation on stage.
“We were in an auditorium, and Jim would let Timmy come out and give the crowd a whole concert,” she said, clearly impressed by his performance.
Her excitement was palpable as she described Calamette singing classics like “Masters of War” and “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall.”
“All of us were kind of shaking, because it was so surreal hearing someone do that,” Fanning remarked.
She praised Calamette for delivering a performance that felt authentic rather than a mere caricature.
“It was still Timmy, but it’s Bob, and this kind of beautiful meld.
That gave me chills,” she added.
As the release date of A Complete Unknown approaches, anticipation continues to build.
