The Royal Connection: Why Prince George and Princess Charlotte Are Learning Spanish
Members of the royal family are expected to master at least one foreign language from a young age, with many being proficient in multiple languages.
King Charles, for instance, is known to be fluent in four languages, including Welsh, French, and German, in addition to English.
Following this tradition, the younger generation of royals, such as Prince William and Princess Kate's children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis – are also being raised to be bilingual.
While it may be assumed that French would be the first choice for the royal children, given its historical significance within the family, Princess Catherine has opted for a different approach by introducing them to Spanish.
The decision to teach her children Spanish has raised eyebrows, especially considering the strong ties the royal family has had with the French language.
Queen Elizabeth was fluent in French, and Prince William is so adept in the language that he affectionately refers to Charlotte as “Minionette.”
However, according to royal expert Danielle Stacey, there is a specific reason behind Kate's choice of Spanish as the second language for her children.
Stacey pointed out that as George, Charlotte, and Louis are likely to have significant royal responsibilities in the future and will interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds worldwide, it is crucial for them to be proficient in multiple languages.
Kate's own personal connections and past experiences, including her time spent in Chile during her gap year, have influenced her decision to prioritize Spanish for her children.
Stacey further elaborated that Kate's familiarity with the language, gained from her time in Chile, plays a role in her preference for Spanish as the children's second language.
Additionally, the royal children have the advantage of having their own Spanish tutor in the form of their nanny, Maria Teresa Turrian Borrallo, who has been a part of the family since 2014.
This dedicated tutor is instrumental in helping the young royals practice and improve their Spanish skills.
