School Fees for Royal Kids Set to Soar: VAT Legislation Hits Private Education
In a significant shift in the education landscape, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis are facing a staggering increase in their school fees, potentially exceeding £75,000.
This change comes on the heels of newly elected Prime Minister Sakhir Starmer's ambitious plans unveiled during his recent address to Parliament.
Starmer's victory in the July 4th general election was marked by a bold manifesto that promised to impose a value-added tax (VAT) on private school fees.
This proposal was further elaborated upon in the King's speech, outlining the Labour government's agenda for the year ahead.
King Charles announced in the House of Lords that the new measures would eliminate the longstanding VAT exemption that private schools have enjoyed.
The implications of this policy are particularly pertinent for the royal family, as the three young royals currently attend Lambrook School in Berkshire.
With the introduction of a 20% tax on their fees, the total amount that Prince William and Kate will need to budget for their children's education is set to rise dramatically.
This translates to an additional £12,595, pushing their total educational expenses to over £75,000.
For the academic year 2023 to 2024, the costs for each child are already substantial.
According to the school's website, Prince George's education comes at a price of £24,714, while Princess Charlotte's fees amount to £22,767.
Young Prince Louis's schooling costs £15,498.
Altogether, the current annual cost for the trio stands at £62,979.
As they navigate these rising costs, Prince William and Kate face a pivotal decision regarding Prince George's future education.
After eight years at Lambrook, the question looms: will the future king transition to Eton College?
If he does, the financial burden will only increase.
Current fees at Eton are £17,583 per term, totaling £52,749 annually.
However, with the new VAT in place, George's education bill could skyrocket to a staggering £63,298.
