Royal Family Update: Archie and Lilibet Receive New Titles
In a significant shift within the royal family, Prince Harry and Meghan's children, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor and Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, have been bestowed with new titles in accordance with long-standing traditions.
Following King Charles' ascent to the throne, both Archie and Lilibet now hold the esteemed titles of His Royal Highness and Her Royal Highness respectively, a result of adjustments in the line of succession.
The practice of granting titles to royal grandchildren traces back to the reign of George V, where it became customary for the offspring of a reigning monarch to receive such distinctions.
Notably, the reigning monarch holds the authority to alter the rules set by their predecessor, with King Charles III well within his rights to amend the regulations concerning the bestowal of royal titles to grandchildren.
During his inaugural address to the nation, King Charles III made mention of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, conveying his affection for the couple while refraining from addressing any potential alterations to the titles of the couple or their offspring.
He expressed, “I want to also express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas.”
As of now, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's children, Archie III and Lilibet I, are yet to be formally recognized as Prince and Princess; however, an impending update is on the horizon.
Following the passing of the Queen, all members of the royal family are slated to advance one step in the line of succession, leading to the forthcoming conferment of the titles of Prince and Princess upon the young heirs.
While the titles of senior royals like Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge have already been adjusted on the royal website to reflect their new designations, the status of Archie and Lilibet remains unchanged.
Despite the fact that they technically hold the titles of Prince and Princess following their grandfather's ascension to the throne, they are currently listed as Master and Miss on the official website.
A spokesperson from the palace disclosed that the website will be updated with the latest information regarding the titles of Archie and Lilibet as soon as it becomes available.
The decision on whether the children will utilize the titles has not been confirmed by their parents or Buckingham Palace, leaving the matter open for speculation.
In a recent statement, the King's representative acknowledged the announcement of William and Kate's titles as the Prince and Princess of Wales, reiterating the monarch's fondness for Harry and Meghan.
Addressing the discrepancy on the website, the spokesperson elucidated that while updates were made for the Waleses, the display of affection on a digital platform posed certain challenges, emphasizing ongoing efforts to rectify this.
When questioned about the possibility of Archie and Lilibet assuming the titles of Prince and Princess, the spokesperson emphasized the current focus on immediate priorities, with plans to update the website once further details emerge.
Amidst speculations in 2021 regarding King Charles' intention to restrict the number of key royals, a decision was rumored to prevent Archie from being designated as a Prince.
