Royal Family Faces Health Setback: King Charles and Princess Catherine Step Back from Duties
In a surprising turn of events, health concerns have led both King Charles and Princess Catherine to take a step back from their royal responsibilities.
With Princess Catherine needing up to three months to recover from abdominal surgery and King Charles undergoing hospital treatment for an enlarged prostate, the question arises as to who will fill in for them during their absence.
When a monarch is unable to carry out their duties temporarily due to illness, two or more Councillors of State are appointed to act on their behalf.
Typically, this responsibility falls to Prince William, the heir to the throne, who holds the titles of Prince of Wales, Councillor of State, and Regent of his father's reign.
While a Regent would serve permanently, Councillors of State can step in on a temporary basis in case of the monarch's incapacity or absence from the UK.
However, it seems unlikely that Prince William or other royal family members will need to take on additional public roles while King Charles is away, as Prince William is focused on supporting Princess Catherine during her recovery and caring for their children.
Despite Buckingham Palace stating that Councillors of State may not be required during King Charles's hospital treatment, the duties of the royal family are expected to shift.
Prince Edward and Sophie may see increased responsibilities, as well as King Charles's youngest brother and sister, who were recently appointed as extra Councillors of State by Parliament.
Royal expert Angela Levin reassured the public that King Charles is in good health and will soon resume his duties.
The coordinated announcement of the royal couple's health issues suggests a strategic approach to ensure the well-being of the family.
Levin highlighted Princess Anne as a key figure who will step up during this period, praising her for being hard-working and efficient.
Princess Anne has already resumed her public engagements after the holiday break, showcasing her dedication to royal duties.
Known for her packed schedule and commitment to charity work, Princess Anne's role within the royal family has become increasingly significant, especially following the passing of the Queen.
Apart from Princess Anne, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Duke of Kent, and Princess Alexandra are also part of the working royals.
However, there have been suggestions for Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie to take on full-time royal roles, though the sisters have pursued their own careers since graduating from university.
