Sotheby's made the surprising announcement on Monday, revealing that the late Princess of Wales' red sweater featuring a black sheep motif will be up for grabs in August.

The renowned jumper, donned by 19-year-old Lady Diana Spencer back in June 1981 at a polo match attended by then-Prince Charles, became a sensation ahead of their royal nuptials.

Lady Diana's fashion choice catapulted British knitwear brand Warm Wonderful into the limelight, leading designers Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne to receive a letter from Buckingham Palace shortly after the event.

A request was made to repair or replace the whimsical jumper, which had been damaged by Diana herself.

A substitute sweater was promptly dispatched, while the original one faded into obscurity until Osborne stumbled upon it this past winter.

Reports suggest that Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has her eye on acquiring Diana's sweater at the upcoming auction.

Speculations abound that Meghan, still enamored with Diana's style, may be considering the sweater for a publicity stunt.

However, questions arise about whether Meghan can afford the hefty price tag attached to the iconic garment.

Amidst these rumors, Princess Diana's brother, Charles Spencer, is said to have intervened by urging Prince William to participate in the auction to thwart Meghan's plans.

Online bidding opens on August 31 and concludes on September 14.

Notably, the record price for a Diana memorabilia item stands at $604,800, achieved by the sale of a Victor Edelstein-designed ball gown earlier this year.
