Prince Edward May Inherit Duke of Edinburgh Title Following Prince Philip’s Passing
Prince Philip, who was bestowed with the title of the Duke of Edinburgh upon his marriage to Princess Elizabeth in 1947, had long expressed his desire for his youngest son, the Earl of Wessex, to inherit the prestigious title.
However, with his recent passing on April 9, 2021, the decision now rests in the hands of the new king, Prince Charles.
When Prince Edward and Sophie Rhys-Jones tied the knot in 1999, they were granted the titles of the Earl and Countess of Wessex.
It was also revealed by Buckingham Palace that Edward would eventually succeed his father as the Duke of Edinburgh, but only after the demise of both Philip and the Queen, as per the Palace's statement at that time.
The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, and the Prince of Wales had mutually agreed that Prince Edward should be granted the Dukedom of Edinburgh in due course, once the current title held by Prince Philip reverts back to the crown.
Amidst these deliberations, royal enthusiasts have shown overwhelming support for Prince Edward to assume the role of the next Duke of Edinburgh, particularly after his recent visit to Newcastle to express gratitude to individuals involved in the Queen's funeral last month.
During his visit to the city centre, Prince Edward interacted with several participants of the Queen's funeral, which took place on September 19 at Westminster Abbey.
This gesture further fueled speculation among royal fans who eagerly anticipate the transfer of the prestigious title to Queen Elizabeth II's youngest son.
In response to these developments, social media platforms have been abuzz with users expressing their backing for Prince Edward to become the new Duke of Edinburgh.
Karen Smith, a Twitter user, remarked, “Sincerely hope the Earl and Countess are made Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.
They worked so hard for our country.”
Another user, Jogab, echoed similar sentiments, stating, “It's time to pass along the Dukedom of Edinburgh.
It's only appropriate.”
Joomz, another Twitter user, emphasized, “Hard worker just like his dad was; he deserves to be the new Duke of Edinburgh.”
While it was widely known that Prince Philip wished for his youngest son, the Earl of Wessex, to inherit his title, the final decision now rests with King Charles III.
The anticipation among royal followers continues to grow as they await the outcome of this significant decision.
