Kate, Princess of Wales, Assumes Sponsorship Role for HMS Glasgow

Kate, the Princess of Wales, embraced her new role as the sponsor of the 21st-century warship, HMS Glasgow, during a recent meeting with the Royal Navy Ships Company.

The prestigious role was bestowed upon her by II in June 2021.

Radiating with joy, the Princess engaged warmly with sailors from the Royal Navy at Windsor Castle.

Clad in an elegant navy suit paired with a crisp white blouse, Kate charmed the Ships Company of HMS Glasgow during the encounter on Thursday.

In a significant development in 2021, Kate took on the sponsorship of the City Class Type 26 frigate, currently in the process of being constructed in Govan, Scotland.

Engaging in conversations with numerous sailors, Kate delved into discussions about the progress of the ship's construction and gained insights into life within the Royal Navy.

Captivating images capturing the Princess interacting with Royal Navy personnel were posted on her and 's personal Twitter account.

The shared photos depicted Kate exuding warmth and enthusiasm as she conversed with the crew members.

Situated along the River Clyde in Glasgow, HMS Glasgow stands as the inaugural vessel in a fresh lineage of frigates known as the City Class.

Noteworthy features of the ship include a flight deck capable of accommodating helicopters as large as the RAF's Chinooks.

Additionally, it will boast a versatile loading bay designed to swiftly house and deploy vessels, vehicles, and containers, as detailed on the Royal Navy's official website.

With a capacity to accommodate 161 personnel, HMS Glasgow is being tailored as an anti-submarine warfare unit.

Once operational, the warship will play a pivotal role in safeguarding the British Army's nuclear deterrent and aircraft carriers.

Alongside HMS Glasgow, two other ships, namely HMS Cardiff and HMS Belfast, are also undergoing construction at the shipyard on the banks of the River Clyde.

These vessels are slated to be stationed at the Devonport Naval Base in Plymouth.

During a visit to the shipyard last year, the Prince of Wales expressed, “Her Majesty the Queen has approved the appointment of my wife Catherine as the sponsor of the superb ship we see taking shape outside HMS Glasgow.
