Duchess Camilla Shares Heartwarming Insights on Family and Literacy
During a recent visit to a school in Cornwall, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, opened up about her cherished relationship with her step-grandchildren—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
Her reflections came as part of her role as patron of the charity Silver Stories, an organization dedicated to fostering connections between young readers and the elderly.
The Duchess emphasized the importance of reading, describing it as the cornerstone of education.
“I think all the young children need their confidence boosted, especially to read, which as we all know is the foundation of learning,” she explained during her tour at Charlestown School in St Austell.
Her words resonated with those present, highlighting the joy that comes from listening to children read, which she noted is often the highlight of the week for many seniors.
In a delightful exchange with Dame Esther Rantzen, a trustee of Silver Stories, Camilla expressed how much she learns from her grandchildren.
“What's so lovely about being a grandmother is that they teach you things, and hopefully, they learn a few things from us,” she remarked, showcasing the mutual benefits of intergenerational relationships.
Camilla's commitment to promoting literacy extends beyond her royal duties.
She is an avid reader and runs an Instagram-based book club called The Reading Room.
This platform not only offers book recommendations but also provides exclusive insights from authors, creating a vibrant community for readers of all ages and backgrounds.
The book club was launched after the success of her reading lists shared during the pandemic in 2020.
Her passion for literature is evident in her various patronages, including her role with the National Literacy Trust and her past presentations of the prestigious Booker Prize.
In April 2022, she celebrated her appointment as President of the Royal Society of Literature with author Bernadine Evaristo at her home in Clarence House.
During her visit to the school library, Camilla engaged with both Silver listeners and readers, discussing their experiences with the charity.
The interaction highlighted the positive impact of reading on both the young and the elderly, fostering a sense of community and connection.
Camilla has previously shared her joy in reading to her grandchildren, revealing that one of their favorite stories features a crafty gangster granny plotting to steal the Queen's crown jewels.
She recounted the delight she feels when her grandchildren's eyes widen in surprise, sparking their imaginations about the adventures their own grandparents might have experienced.
