Royal Rivalry Unfolds at Twickenham: The Cambridges Take Sides in Rugby Showdown

In a spirited display of family rivalry, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge found themselves on opposite sides during the highly anticipated England versus Wales rugby match at Twickenham.

Accompanied by their son Prince George, the royal couple showcased their allegiance to the rival teams, with George even sharing a cheeky confession about tackling his mother during their playful rugby sessions.

Kate, who recently became the patron of the Rugby Football Union, donned an England scarf, while William, the patron of the Welsh Rugby Union since 2016, sported a red Wales scarf.

This match marked a significant moment for Kate, as she stepped into her new role following the Queen's decision to bestow her with the patronages that were once held by Prince Harry before he stepped back from royal duties in 2020.

The competitive spirit between the couple was palpable.

Earlier this month, during her first engagement with members of the England teams, Kate had remarked on their fierce competition, saying, “we're terribly competitive.”

She added that supporting different teams would certainly spice things up at home, especially with their children involved.

Speaking of the kids, Kate revealed that all three of her children—George, Charlotte, and Louis—are getting into rugby.

She humorously noted that Louis has been playing with a rather fearless attitude, describing his style as “kamikaze” when he plays with his siblings.

It seems the royal family is embracing the sport wholeheartedly.

Upon their arrival at the stadium, the Cambridges were greeted by Geoff Blackett, the president of the Rugby Football Union, and Gerald Davies, the president of the Welsh Rugby Union.

The atmosphere was electric, with William dressed in a sharp navy suit and Kate looking chic in a black and white checked coat, holding her England scarf close.

Prince George, however, took a more neutral approach, wearing a puffer jacket in red and blue that didn't lean towards either team.

Before the match kicked off, the family mingled with representatives from the IFU's Community and Grassroots Game, including volunteers and council members like Joe Bedford and Commander Kusty Marla.

William, keeping a protective arm around George, encouraged him to engage with the guests.

“It's a big game,” he said, clearly excited about the day's events.

He also expressed his joy at being back in the stadium, noting how strange it had been to watch games without fans during the pandemic.

When asked which team George would be supporting, the young prince simply shrugged and flashed a smile, prompting laughter from William, who pointed out the playful rivalry at home.

“It's become quite the thing in the house,” he said, indicating that Kate was just as invested in the match.
