Duke of Cambridge Celebrates 40 Years of The Passage’s Impact on Homelessness
In a heartfelt visit to The Passage, a prominent London homeless charity, the Duke of Cambridge marked a significant milestone—40 years of transformative work.
This occasion was particularly special for Prince William, as it brought back memories of his childhood visits alongside his mother, the late Princess Diana.
Stepping into the central London charity, William took part in an awards ceremony honoring the organization's achievements.
He reflected on his long-standing connection to The Passage, which began when he was just a young boy in 1993, accompanied by Diana.
Since then, he has made several secret visits, including three before Christmas in 2020, demonstrating his ongoing commitment to the cause.
Sharing his experiences on social media, William posted nostalgic photographs from his visits, including a touching image of his mother engaging with community members at the charity.
In his Instagram caption, he expressed his deep affection for the organization and the people it serves.
“Every time I come here, I am touched by the warmth and friendliness, and the dignity and respect you show to everyone who comes through your door,” he wrote.
The Duke also acknowledged the profound impact that The Passage has had on individuals facing homelessness.
He praised the charity for its dedication and effectiveness, stating how impressed he is by the positive changes in the lives of those it helps.
“Thank you to everyone for your continuous work,” he added, highlighting the importance of their mission.
William's bond with The Passage is rooted in his mother's influence.
He recalled how Diana instilled in him a sense of compassion for those in need.
In 2019, he became the charity's patron, further solidifying his commitment to its cause.
Established in 1980, The Passage has supported over 135,000 people in crisis through various initiatives, including resource centers and innovative accommodation services.
During the celebration, he presented the Outstanding Achievement Award to Colin Chilman, a former alcoholic who benefited from The Passage's support.
Colin, who remembered Diana visiting the charity with her sons, was recognized for finding employment with the help of the organization.
“Colin, what a journey.
Well done!
I am so pleased it's going well,” William commended him.
In his speech, the Duke expressed admiration for the charity's staff and volunteers, especially those who have transitioned from clients to helpers.
Their ability to give back after overcoming personal challenges is a testament to the transformative power of The Passage, he noted.
