Prince Harry and Meghan Markle: The End of Their Royal Highness Titles
In a significant shift from their royal roots, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have officially stepped back from using the title of “His/Her Royal Highness.”
This change comes as part of their decision to leave the royal family in 2020, a move that was surrounded by extensive negotiations and new rules governing their status.
Though they still hold the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the couple agreed not to use the HRH designation when they announced their departure from royal duties.
Their exit was not just a personal choice; it involved discussions with the royal family about how they would navigate their new lives in the United States.
As part of this agreement, they also relinquished the right to operate under the name Sussex Royal.
In response to their new circumstances, Harry and Meghan established the Archule Foundation, aiming to focus on charitable work and community engagement.
However, their new website, Sussex.com, has faced criticism for prominently displaying their titles, which some see as a contradiction to their stated desire to distance themselves from royal life.
Interestingly, during a recent interaction with Scott Moore, the new chief executive of the Invictus Games, Harry and Meghan made it clear how they wished to be addressed.
Moore revealed that they preferred to be called “Sir” and “Mom,” a formal request that contrasts sharply with Harry's earlier approach.
Just a few years ago, he encouraged delegates at an Edinburgh tourism conference to simply call him Harry, reflecting a more casual demeanor.
Currently, the couple is enjoying a three-day stay at their Whistler Resort in Canada, celebrating one year until the 2025 Invictus Games.
Canada holds special significance for them, as they spent some time there after leaving the royal family and before relocating to California.
Meghan, in particular, has fond memories of her time in Toronto during her filming of the popular series Suits.
While at the resort, Harry took the opportunity to engage in various winter sports, including snowboarding, while Meghan captured the moments on camera.
This upcoming Invictus Games will mark a notable milestone, as it will incorporate winter sports for the first time.
Moreover, 2024 will commemorate ten years since the inaugural tournament, highlighting the growth and evolution of this significant event.
Plans are in place for a ceremony at St. Paul's Cathedral later this spring to honor this decade-long journey.
However, the couple has yet to confirm whether they will attend, leaving fans and supporters eagerly awaiting updates on their participation.
As Harry and Meghan navigate their post-royal lives, their choices continue to spark conversations about identity, privilege, and the evolving nature of their relationship with the British monarchy.
